Location: Southeast Community Center, San Francisco, CA
ARTIST: Mildred Howard
After an extensive community engagement process the SFPUC has broken ground on a 45,000 sq. ft., LEED certified, three-story Community Center.
For this project we commissioned artist Mildred Howard to create a large sculpture for the central plaza. The forms, traditionally worn as anklets, are dramatically enlarged in bronze and oriented vertically, subtly suggesting the outline of a ship’s hull. For Howard, the work will stand as an homage to the travels, trials, and perseverance of Bayview residents of any race or ethnicity.
